Some men take supplements or try other forms of alternative medicine to treat their ED.
The inability to achieve an erection is a symptom of an underlying health problem or a result of lifestyle factors that aren’t allowing the physiological mechanisms of an erection to unfold. For some men, this is only an occasional problem, which may be the result of increased stress, drinking alcohol or fatigue. But for men who experience erectile dysfunction more than 50 percent of the time when they are trying to engage in sexual activity, this may indicate that there’s a bigger health problem that needs to be addressed.

The patient can inject medications directly into the corpora cavernosa to help attain and maintain erections. Medications such as papaverine hydrochloride, phentolamine, and prostaglandin E1 (alprostadil) can be used alone or in combinations to attain erections. All of these medications are vasodilators and work by increasing blood flow into the penis. Prostaglandin E1 (Caverject, Edex) is easier to obtain; however, it is associated with penile pain in some individuals. The use of combinations of two or three of these medications can decrease the risk of having penile pain.

It is known that certain lifestyle factors can increase the likelihood of erectile dysfunction, and therefore patients may be advised to reduce their alcohol intake and stop smoking. Regular exercise may also help symptoms, as it may improve physical health, in addition to reducing any symptoms of anxiety or stress that may be contributing to the condition. However, cycling for more than 3 hours a week has been shown to increase the likelihood of erectile dysfunction, and so if patients cycle more than this, they should be advised to seek alternative means of exercise. Even when ED has a physical cause, psychotherapy can help. A therapist can teach the man and their partner techniques to reduce performance anxiety and improve intimacy. Therapy can also help couples adjust to the use of vacuum devices and implants.
Erectile Dysfunction is one of the most familiar disorders reported in men across all age groups. It is defined as the inability to maintain an erection firm enough to engage in sexual intercourse. Even though erectile dysfunction occurs sporadically, it is concerning when it occurs frequently and requires medical attention. Erectile dysfunction devices are designed to focus on the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction. Since an increased blood flow causes erection in the penis, most devices work similarly to induce a penile erection by providing that to the penis.

Penile implant surgery can be very effective, provided that precautions are taken to avoid infection. Prosthesis surgery is contraindicated if systemic cutaneous or urinary infection is present. Antibiotics should be provided pre-operatively, and the surgical site should be shaved immediately prior to surgery. We use both Mentor and AMS penile implants with specialized antibiotic coats. Patients are hospitalized overnight for closed suction drainage, and sent home on seven days of post-operative antibiotics. Using these and other precautions, our implant infection rate is comparable to national averages (2-4%, 1-2% for antibiotic coated implants). Vascular surgery is recommended only in healthy individuals with recently acquired erectile dysfunction due to a focal arterial narrowing (usually related to trauma) and in the absence of generalized vascular disease.
